The sound of breaking glass woke Jeff from a dream-filled sleep. His heart was racing, at first because of the dream and then because of the recognition of what was happening. He was being robbed.
Jeff threw his legs out of the bed, grabbed his cell phone, and scrambled for his closet. He shut the door and sat on the floor before hitting the button to illuminate the screen.
Without unlocking it, he touched the word ’emergency’ on the screen, which immediately began ringing.
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?” The operator answered.
“My name is Jeff Bezose. Someone is breaking into my house.” Jeff half-whispered. He could hear things being thrown around.
“Are you in a safe place?”
“I’m in my bedroom closet at the moment. Whoever is in my house is downstairs.” Jeff replied as quietly as he could.
“What’s your address, sir?”
“43 Gilmore Drive, Unionville,” he replied in a panicked whisper as the noises grew closer, “there was a police officer stationed right outside my house yesterday. Where is he?”
“I need you to remain calm, sir, I am alerting local law enforcement currently,” she replied.
“Okay, sorry, thank you. Please hurry, they are getting closer.” Jeff replied, feeling the fear twist in his stomach as something smashed at the top of the stairs.
“Do you know if the people in your home are armed?”
“No. No, I don’t know that,” Jeff whispered as the door to the next room over sounded as though it were kicked off the hinges. “Please help me!”
He hung up the phone before pulling the back off it and yanking the back of it out. He didn’t want to risk them hearing the operator, or the phone ringing if they called back. He stashed the phone in a pair of his slacks hanging above him and grabbed the bat he had leaning in the corner.
He heard muffled voices, at least two, talking in the next room, though he couldn’t make out what they were saying. He suddenly realized he was still wearing the amulet, and if they found him they would get it. He moved to pull it off but the necklace wouldn’t fit over his head. It caught him just below the jaw before it stopped.
He panicked as he tried to wrestle off the necklace. It didn’t have a clasp on it, and he had put it on over his head the night before, but now it felt as though it were significantly smaller, as if it had shrunk somehow.
Suddenly a resounding boom erupted from just outside the closet as he assumed they broke his bedroom door.
